A love of teaching and a challenging puppy named Betsy inspired this VSA graduate

VSA graduate Tomi Vensel and Betsy

Tomi Vensel’s story begins in a classroom, where for nearly two decades she inspired young minds as a dedicated teacher. Her days were filled with laughter, learning, and the occasional challenge that comes with teaching third graders. However, her passion for dogs and volunteering with rescues hinted at a different calling that would eventually change her life.

A thirst for understanding

In 2019, while still deeply immersed in education, Tomi faced a personal challenge that shifted her perspective on dog training. While fostering a puppy named Betsy, she encountered behavioral issues that stemmed from the dog’s reactivity and previous surgeries. “I felt really alone in the dog world because I didn’t know other people with reactive dogs,” she recalled. This realization sparked a desire to deepen her understanding of dog behavior, especially as she planned to retire from teaching in 2024.

As she began researching strategies to help Betsy, Tomi stumbled upon the Victoria Stilwell Academy for Dog Training & Behavior (VSA) after binge-watching It’s Me or the Dog. Intrigued by the positive approach to training and behavior modification, she decided to pursue her dream. The pandemic, which closed schools for a time, provided the perfect opportunity for her to enroll in VSA’s Dog Trainer Course. “I thought, this is the time; I need to do this now with dog training,” she said.

Learning at her own pace

VSA offered the unique blend of online coursework and personalized support that perfectly suited Tomi’s learning style. She appreciated the self-paced structure, which allowed her to balance her teaching responsibilities while diving into the content she was passionate about. “Working on the coursework for Victoria Stilwell was my happy place,” she shared. The engaging modules, combined with the vibrant faculty interactions, made the learning experience enjoyable. Tomi formed a special bond with her personal Faculty Advisor, Tiffany, who provided invaluable feedback and encouragement. “I always looked forward to our sessions. She made me feel really capable,” Tomi reflected.

By June 2021, Tomi had completed her training at VSA and transitioned out of teaching. Now, as a professional dog trainer, she focuses on working with reactive, fearful, and teenage dogs. Drawing on her teaching experience, she has found that many principles of behavior management apply to both dogs and children. “Learning theory is learning theory, whether it’s dogs or kids,” she noted, emphasizing how her background enhanced her understanding of canine behavior.

Making a difference

Tomi’s training from VSA has not only equipped her with the knowledge to help dogs but also to support their families. She conducts private training sessions and offers weekly Zoom office hours for clients needing guidance. Her days are a mix of one-on-one interactions, writing training plans, and building her social media presence.

One of the most rewarding moments of her new career came when she helped a client with a German shepherd facing severe reactivity. The previous trainer’s advice had led to a near-tragic situation, with the dog redirecting aggression towards its owner. “Euthanasia was on the table for this dog,” Tomi explained, highlighting the urgency of the situation. After several sessions, the dog’s behavior improved significantly. The owner expressed relief, saying he felt he could safely take his dog out for walks again. “It was really special to help him through that,” Tomi said, noting the profound connection she felt to the situation.

For those considering a career in dog training, Tomi wholeheartedly recommends VSA. “It really prepared me for the certified professional dog trainer test,” she explained, crediting the foundation she received for her successful completion of the CCPDT exam. “Being able to do the online part really worked for me, and being able to work at my own pace, but still be able to reach out for help if I needed help. All the modules built on each other really well.” The supportive environment and structured curriculum made her learning experience both comprehensive and enjoyable.

A rewarding new career

As Tomi settles into her new role, she finds immense joy in her work. “I love writing training plans and providing doable homework for my clients,” she said with enthusiasm. The opportunity to integrate her teaching background into her dog training practice has been fulfilling, as she also helps develop a humane education program for local organizations.

Tomi’s journey from the classroom to dog training showcases the power of following one’s passion. With the tools she gained from the Victoria Stilwell Academy, she’s not just changing the lives of dogs; she’s also helping their families build better relationships and understand their furry companions. As she puts it, “It’s great to be in the classroom again—with a dog instead!”
